Introduction

Effective leadership is key to sustainable capacity building among school staff and high achievement rates among students. District Leadership that Works: Striking the Right Balance shares the research that proves that district leadership matters, and the ripple effect it has on student achievement in the classroom. The book offers guidance and rubrics to support leaders who want to create defined autonomy among their staff, while receiving their support towards reaching the overarching goals of the organisation. The chapters include: background information on why district leadership matters; putting the findings into perspective; setting and monitoring non-negotiable goals for achievement and for instruction characteristics of high quality teachers; collaborative goal setting, board alignment and allocation of resources; defined autonomy in a high-reliability district; and the perils of second order change.

Summary

The EBP project has used District Leadership that Works as a teaching tool to support directors’ and principals’ professional development. This book was read and reviewed during Network for Principal (NfP) design meetings and learning sessions, in order to help participants better understand the impact of their leadership style and activities on the results obtained in the classroom as well as student and staff engagement.
