At Western Quebec School Board in 2015-2016, there were 4171 students enrolled in elementary schools and 2784 in secondary levels.

In the Adult and Vocational Education programs, the most recent demographic data (2014-2015) indicate that there were 686 students registered in the Adult Education and 238 students in vocational programs (2014-2015).

This first graph displays the 5 year graduation rates for eight cohorts from this board. For each cohort, the year on the horizontal axis indicates the year the cohort entered Secondary 1. As such, the results report the graduation rate for students who were awarded a diplôme d’études secondaires (DES) within five years. For instance, the cohort beginning Secondary 1 in the 2011-2012 school year represents the graduating students for the 2015-2016 school year.

The Quebec and Western Quebec graduation rates both show a steady increase over time. The Western Quebec graduation rate for 2004 cohort is 58% while the graduation rate for the 2011 cohort is 66%, a 8 percentage points increase over eight years. The Western Quebec rate of 66% for the most recent cohort (2011) represents a 2% drop from 2010. The difference between the Western Quebec and the overall Quebec graduation rate for the 2010 cohort (66% and 71%, respectively) is 5 percentage points, keeping Quebec about the WQSB. The overall provincial graduation rates are consistently above the WQ rates, though never by more than 6% points and for some cohorts, as little as 1% point.

This second graph displays the 7 year graduation rates for six cohorts. For each cohort, the year on the horizontal axis indicates the year the cohort entered Secondary 1. As such, the results report the graduation rate for students who were awarded a diplôme d’études secondaires (DES) within seven years. For instance, the cohort beginning Secondary 1 in the Fall of 2009 school year represents the graduating students for the 2015-2016 school year.

The Quebec and Western Quebec graduation rates both show an overall increase over time, with Western Quebec graduation rate taking a drop of 6% in the 2006 cohort. The Western Quebec graduation rate for the 2004 cohort was 73%, matching that of the provincial rate, while the graduation rate for the 2009 cohort was 76%, a 3 percentage point increase over Quebec. The Western Quebec school board graduation rate for the most recent cohort (2009) represents the highest to date (76%). The graduation rates for Western Quebec has an increasing trend in graduation rates with time, but is consistently a few percentage points below the provincial rates.

The graduation rate within 5 years ranges from 58% to 68%. The graduation rate within 7 years ranges from 70% to 76%. The 5 year graduation rate was steady for many years, hovering between 58% and 60%, before experiencing a jump for the 2009 cohort, exceeding the rate for 2008 by 6 percentage points (60% to 66%). An additional two years to graduate increases the rates of students finishing secondary school in WQ by up to 15%. However, with the increases in the five year graduation rate, the gap between the rate of students graduating with five years and seven years is narrowing. The latest available data shows a gap of 10% compared to 15% in 2004.

All the female cohorts have consistently higher graduation rates than the males. The female graduation rates have been steadily increasing, from 65% for the 2004 cohort to 76% for the 2011 cohort, an increase of 11% points . The male graduation rates show more variation (Min: 51% and Max: 65%) with a difference of 14% points. The male graduation rate showed an increase from the 2004 cohort to 2005, but the initial 5% increase was lost for a 3 year period from 2005 to 2008. The 2009 cohort of males graduating jumped by 11% points, closely aligning with the provincial rates, with only a 2% gender gap that year. After 2009 both genders graduation rates have moved in opposing directions. The most recent cohort (2011) shows a significant increase of 9% points since 2009 for the female graduation rate, up to 76%, while the male graduation rate has dropped from 65% to 57%, marking a 19% difference between boys and girls for the 2011 cohort.

The 7 year graduation rate gender gap has been quite variable for the 2004 to 2009 cohorts. In 2005 and 2006 the gender gap was between 0 to 2 percentage points, compared to 2004 and 2007, where it was 12 percentage points apart.. A very significant event is the 2009 male cohort surpassing the female graduation rate for the first time, and by 5% points. This has only occurred on two occasions across the nine English schools boards since 2004.
